ARMOR: One of the big things we will be doing is making armor for the extras for one of the pivotal scenes in the film. While it would be wonderful to actually make real armor for everyone, our budget just doesn't allow that. So we began to look for alternatives. In perusing many tutorials we found and fell in love with craft foam. Easy to work with and dead easy to apply various paint techniques to, we began with the first simple pieces of armor: the Teutonic Vambraces.
The Vambrace - We wanted to use metal on the Teutonic knights. It goes with the cold sterile look we envision for them. But we wanted to add a bit of detailing to the armor as well, hinting at the opulence they achieved in their crusade against the Lithuanians. We added crosses to the vambraces. These crosses are more ornate than the simple crusader cross but we liked the over all look of them. We used the same technique to create the shoulder harnesses for the men at arms. Here is the Tutorial:

Scale Mail - For the leather shoulder armor for the Lithuanians. The same process can be used for different size scales. We are also going to make the breast piece for Algus using the same technique. We will post pictures once we get all those little scales done and mounted.

Teutonic Helmet - We wanted to make something that looks like this helmet. There was a lot of trial and error on this project as we added papier mache to the mix. But we are quite pleased with the final outcome. Check it out for yourself:

WEAPONS - Weapons are an integral part of medieval culture. With the Lithuanians using archery and the Teutonics mounted combat we were challenged to come up with some clever solutions to the weapons requirements and stay within a manageable budget.

COSTUME ACCESSORIES - A good costume is more than just fabric on an actor. It needs to represent a feeling, a mood. It can be used to differentiate between cultures within time periods. We are looking for three distinct looks for Razulia's Tears. The Lithuanians are a little on the medieval Russe side, with a lot of color and flowing fabrics, giving an overall organic feel. The Teutonics are more sterile, though they use rich colors and ornamentation, we are using heavier fabrics and trims. The third group is the supernaturals. We are going fantastical with these. But for a costume to truly pop you need accessories.
The following are some tutorials showing you how to make some of those we are building for the film.
Belts and How To Make a Tassel - The Lithuanians are using sashes in their costuming, while the Teutonics are using belts. Some of the belts will have tassels. This Tutorial gives an overview of how we chose belts and make sashes. And, of course, tassels.

Floral Hair Ornamentations - We want to carry the nature feel into the wedding ceremony and feast afterwards. One of the ways we decided to do this was via flowers. Lena and I are going to show you how to make simple flower wreaths and floral hair ornaments. The process is simple but the finished product will really enhance the visual.
